Finding The Best Plants for all our Gardens

Working with Local Nurseries: Sourcing the Best Plants for Every Garden Project in West Sussex

One of the most important, and often overlooked, parts of a successful garden project is plant sourcing. A beautifully designed garden will only ever be as good as the plants that go into it, which is why building strong relationships with trusted local nurseries is an essential part of what I do as a garden designer in West Sussex.

It’s not just about placing an order and hoping for the best. It’s about knowledge, trust, and taking the time to hand-pick the right plants for each individual project.

Why Local Nurseries Matter

Working with local nurseries offers huge advantages. Plants grown in similar soil types and weather conditions are far more likely to thrive once they’re planted into a garden in Sussex.

Local growers understand the challenges of the area, whether that’s heavy clay soils, coastal exposure, or periods of drought, and they cultivate plants accordingly. This means better quality, stronger root systems, and ultimately more successful gardens for clients.

It also allows for a more personal approach. Rather than relying on catalogues or online orders, I can visit nurseries, inspect stock, and select plants at their very best.

Hand Picking the Best Specimens

Every plant that goes into a garden is chosen with care. I’ll often visit nurseries in person to walk the rows, checking structure, health, and form.

It’s about selecting plants with good shape, strong growth, and no signs of stress or disease. For feature plants or key focal points, this becomes even more important, these are the specimens that will define the space, so they need to be just right.

This hands-on approach ensures that what arrives on site is exactly what the design intended, not a generic substitute, but a carefully chosen plant that fits perfectly within the scheme.

Building Strong Relationships

Over the years, I’ve built strong working relationships with a number of excellent nurseries, each offering something slightly different.

Some specialise in high-quality herbaceous and perennial planting, others in mature specimens or architectural plants, and some are invaluable when it comes to sourcing larger trees.

Having these relationships means access to better stock, honest advice, and often the ability to source more unusual or hard-to-find plants when needed. It also creates a level of trust, nurseries understand the standard expected, and I know I can rely on their quality.

Specialist Nurseries for Specialist Needs

Different projects require different plants, and knowing where to go is key.

For larger trees, working with specialist growers is essential. These are significant investments within a garden, both visually and financially, so selecting the right specimen is critical. Visiting in person allows me to assess scale, structure, and suitability before making that decision.

For more detailed planting schemes, having access to nurseries with a wide and varied plant palette ensures designs can be executed exactly as planned, without compromise.

Timing and Planning Are Everything

Plant sourcing isn’t something that happens at the last minute. It requires careful planning.

Availability changes with the seasons, and the best stock doesn’t sit around for long, especially during peak planting periods in spring and autumn. By working closely with nurseries and planning ahead, I can reserve plants in advance and ensure everything is ready when planting day arrives.

This level of organisation helps projects run smoothly and avoids the need for substitutions that can dilute the overall design.

Quality Over Convenience

It can be tempting to prioritise convenience, ordering everything from one place or choosing what’s readily available, but this often comes at the expense of quality.

By taking the time to source from multiple trusted nurseries and hand-select plants, the end result is far superior. The garden feels more cohesive, more established from day one, and better equipped to thrive long-term.

The Finishing Touch

Planting is the stage where a garden truly comes to life. Hard landscaping may provide the structure, but it’s the plants that bring movement, colour, and character.

By working closely with some of the best local nurseries in West Sussex and beyond, and by personally selecting the right plants for each project, I can ensure that every garden not only looks exceptional on completion but continues to develop beautifully over time.

It’s a process that takes time and care, but it’s one of the most rewarding parts of the job, and one that makes all the difference in the finished result.
