April Plant of the Month

Plant of the Month – Viburnum ‘Kilimanjaro Sunrise’

Viburnum ‘Kilimanjaro Sunrise’ is a superb small tree or shrub that offers year-round interest. In April, May and June, it becomes smothered in elegant white lacecap flowers. As the season progresses, these blooms take on a delicate blush of pale pink, soon followed by clusters of vibrant crimson berries. Over time, the berries deepen to a rich plum colour, adding further seasonal appeal. The flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, while birds eagerly feed on the fruit. Often, a second flush of flowers appears later in the season, producing additional berries into autumn, when the foliage turns a striking burgundy.

The species Viburnum plicatum belongs to the Adoxaceae family (formerly Caprifoliaceae) and is native to China, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Its name “plicatum” means “pleated,” referring to the distinctively textured leaves. ‘Kilimanjaro Sunrise’ is a compact, slow-growing cultivar with heart-shaped, dark green, deeply veined foliage. It gained notable recognition as the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year in 2015.

This variety forms a multi-stemmed, upright shrub with a naturally tiered structure. Typically reaching around six feet in height and two feet in width, it works beautifully as a specimen plant, within a mixed border, or even as a flowering hedge where space is limited.

For best results, grow it in moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring only light pruning. Young plants should be left largely unpruned, while established specimens benefit from removing any vertical shoots that disrupt their layered form. This should be done in summer, after flowering. Any dead, diseased, or misplaced branches can also be removed at this time.

Thanks to its architectural shape, Viburnum plicatum makes an excellent focal point in a border. Its distinctive tiered habit can make companion planting a challenge, as surrounding plants should complement rather than compete. Upright ornamental grasses such as Calamagrostis provide a pleasing contrast in texture. However, one of the most effective pairings is with hardy geraniums like Geranium ‘Patricia’ or Geranium psilostemon. These can weave gently through the lower branches, creating a harmonious and balanced planting scheme where both plants enhance each other without overwhelming the display.
