Getting Insight into the world of Garden Design

The Garden Design Process : From Ideas to Reality

Transforming your outdoor space into a beautiful, functional garden is a journey, one that starts with understanding your vision and ends with a space you’ll love for years to come. At Alex Bell Garden Design, based in Steyning, West Sussex, I guide you through each step of the garden design process, making it clear, collaborative, and enjoyable.

Step 1: Initial Site Visit

Every project begins with an initial site visit, a relaxed opportunity to meet, walk through your garden, and discuss your ideas in detail. During this visit, I listen to your aspirations, note any practical considerations, and explore the potential of your space. From this meeting, I create a client brief: a set of notes that captures your requirements and dreams, forming the foundation for the design.

This first visit is comes with no obligation. At this stage, I can also provide an outline of my design fees, so you have a clear idea of what to expect. Because every garden is unique, exact costs are difficult to confirm before seeing the site, but as a guide, design fees usually start from around £600 and increase depending on the complexity and scale of the project. Following our discussion, I provide a detailed fee proposal for your consideration.

Step 2: Site Survey

Once you decide to move forward, the next step is a thorough site survey. For smaller or straightforward gardens, I carry out the survey myself. More complex projectsm for example, those with significant level changes or existing features, may require a professional surveyor to ensure every detail is captured accurately.

Step 3: Concept Plans

With the survey complete, I prepare concept plans to explore the layout, function, and style of your garden. These preliminary designs are presented to you for feedback, allowing us to collaborate and refine the ideas until you are completely satisfied. This stage is key to balancing aesthetics, practicality, and your budget. I aim to provide indicative costs during the concept stage to guide decisions and avoid surprises later.

Step 4: Detailed Design

Once the concept is approved, I develop detailed plans. These include hard landscaping specifications, patios, paths, walls, and other structures as well as a planting scheme that considers seasonal interest, colour, and texture. This level of detail allows your garden to be accurately costed and constructed.

Step 5: Build and Planting

With the design finalised, I can recommend trusted landscapers I’ve worked with, or collaborate with your chosen contractor. If you wish, I can also stay involved during the build process to monitor progress, this service is available at an additional fee.

Finally, once the hard landscaping is complete, I usually assist with planting. This includes sourcing plants, setting them out according to the design, and implementing the planting scheme to ensure your garden looks its best from the very start.

Every garden is different, and I tailor my approach to suit your needs, the site, and your personal style. My goal is to create a space that’s not only beautiful but also functional, sustainable, and a joy to spend time in.
